Purpose

Founded in 2006, the Ohio State University - Pusan National University Joint TESOL Program is a six-week, intensive program for Korean teachers of English that takes place each summer at Pusan National University in Busan, Korea. Our program offers preservice and inservice teachers the opportunity to develop and augment their professional expertise in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) through a series of five courses taught by faculty and instructors affiliated with Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Courses include academic English, second language acquisition, TESOL methods, pedagogical grammar, and testing.

Participants

Participants in our 2007 cohort included Korean elementary, middle and high school English teachers, as well as students majoring or interested in English education. The 2007 OSU team of faculty and instructors included Lisya Seloni, Dr. Cate Crosby, Dr. Karen Newman, and Dr. Alan Hirvela (Director). Our supportive PNU team included Dr. Il Jae-Do (Dean), Dr. Lee Jae-so, and Ms. Lee. Mr. Choi Sueng-Chan provided also provided technical support.

In some of our class activities, course participants shared creative teaching ideas in a series of informative and engaging presentations. A good time was had by all! Here are some highlights from our talented participants during Dr. Newman’s methods and pedagogical grammar courses:
